What
is Safe Drinking Water? |
Safe drinking
water is essential for health and business
prosperity. According to the Wisconsin
Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Wisconsin
is recognized as a national leader in well
protection. NR809 regulates safe drinking
water in Wisconsin. This regulation
mandates that certain private well owners
regularly comply with monitoring activities to
ensure safe drinking water is supplied to users
of the system.

What Needs to be
Done About Drinking Water? |
Since 1974, the
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has
set national safety standards for over 80
contaminants in drinking water.
Contaminants can include Volatile Organic
Compounds (VOC's), lead pesticides, nitrates and
bacteria. Naturally occurring materials
can also be found at levels deemed unacceptable
for drinking.
By March, 2005,
all public water systems will be required to
have a certified operator manage their system.
This includes taking required compliance
samples.
